Re: 13th November 1970, Friday
MARIA COLUMBUS: I had just finished taking out a roll of film and was in the process of putting another roll in my camera. He just stood there watching me — I don’t know how I managed to do it without dropping everything —and, as I snapped the back of my camera, he said something like “You blew it, honey” with a big smirk. He walked over to a guard, took off his hat, then walked back by me and I snapped this shot.
LVLE RAY: I remember that Elvis forgot the words to ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ at the San Francisco show. If I remember correctly, he was repeating the same line by mistake. He put his hand on his forehead and tipped his head because he was embarrassed. But the audience was clearly on his side and cheered him on when they realised that he was so disappointed in himself. With that he was able to continue without further problems. Elvis looked great, and the audience was enthusiastic and with him. He had a thing about the hats that the guards were wearing; he reached down and swiped this guard’s hat and wore it briefly before giving it back.
Elvis Fans Trap Him At Hotel
The San Mateo TimesNovember 14. 1970
Peace doesn’t come easily for Elvis Presley. After finishing a concert before 14,000 at Daly City’s Cow Palace last night, the long-time rock idol returned to the Airport Marina Hotel in Burlingame for some much-needed solitude and rest at about 11 p.m. But it was not meant to be. The old
hound dog was met at the hotel by 20 to 30 young girls who wanted his autograph. “I don’t know how they did it,” lamented a hotel official, “but they actually beat him back to the hotel.” The girls confronted the weary Presley at a rear entrance. He dutifully signed autographs for them. The
voung fans were unable to follow the singer inside because of strict security in the hotel itself, the spokesman said. Presley himself has 14 bodyguards. There were some Presley fans at the hotel this morning, too, the official said. Elvis checked out before noon today, blue suede shoes and all.
ZANNE LEIGH STONICH: I had just attended one of Elvis’ concerts at the Cow Palace, San Francisco. After the concert. I listened to the radio and the DJ mentioned the name of the hotel where Elvis was staying. My mother and I drove over there and it was unreal. Women were climbing up the fire escape to get into Elvis’ room. When we walked into the lobby, it was jammed from wall-to-wall with women. I was pushed back outside by the mob. Then I saw a big, black, shiny limousine draw up. A young man got out of the driver’s seat and walked up to me inside the lobby. He said his name was Jim, and that he was one of the chauffeurs. He told me that he had a day off the next day and asked me if I would like to meet Elvis at the San Francisco Airport. The King was leaving for another concert in his private plane. | finally talked my mother into letting me go, and Jim picked me up the following morning. We drove to the hotel first but Elvis wasn’t ready to leave. Elvis came out on his balcony and started clowning around. A few minutes later. he went back into his room. He then came out with his entourage and they all left for the airport.
