RIP Sir Thomas Sean Connery

Post by Alan » Mon Nov 02, 2020 6:42 pm

October 1962.
The Beatles entered the singles chart with Love Me Do.
The day before Dr No had premiered.

The British invasion had begun.

Connery, or was it Bond, became the first "5th Beatle" amongst many.

Elvis introduced him in 1971 at a concert in Vegas whilst the movie Diamonds Are Forever was being shot.
Like Elvis, Connery's contribution to everyone is a vast, comprehensive and high quality one.
His films were diverse, though he battled hard to break away from the character that made him. Well, he didn't find it hard, just the movie going public did.
I'll always group Connery, Moore and Caine as the 3 British actors that ran with the movie / TV baton of the 60s on behalf of their part in the British invasion and we have left with us just Maurice Micklethwaite, Mr "My name is Harry Palmer" himself, to carry that baton 60 years on.
Sir Sean had 90 years on this earth, a great milestone, even though the last two were ones where he had succumbed to dementia. He will never be forgotten, the legacy he built won't allow that, and what a great legacy that is.

RIP Bond, RIP the best Bond ever.

Rest in Peace!

Sean Connery was the quintessential Bond but contrary to popular notion he was not the first actor to tackle that role. Barry Nelson played James Bond in a TV production of Casino Royale in the late 50s.

Yes, there was a CBS TV version where the character was Jimmy Bond.
Others actors to play Bond before Connery were the UK's Bob Holness - that was on radio and another James Bond on radio was an actor who later appeared in a Bond Film, George Baker.

I wasn't aware he introduced Sean, or even if there was any evidence of him attending a show. Is this available anywhere?

PS Michael Caine = Maurice MickleWHITE ;)

Harry Palmer is grateful for the correction :D
I'll try and locate the introduction of Sean as it is available to hear - it might be on a cd-r only, but I'll try and dig it up.

PS - Welcome to the site - hope you enjoy.
