transition from Windows 10 - 11

Post by Walter Hale 5 » Wed Oct 08, 2025 11:41 pm

Hey my friends,

Am in the process of getting a new 15.5 inch laptop computer with Windows 11.

Technicians are taking care of this.

This one i am using is from a 9 years old Desktop. It was a struggle to get the necessary updates installed.

I was also shocked to learn the newer laptop models no longer have built-in DVD/CD players. The technicians tell me that i'd need an external DVD/CD player to connect to new Win 11 model.

All should be ready by monday 13 October.

I pray and hope i will be able to use the new laptop with all the same software backups, bookmarks and process i been used to with my previous laptop.

Meanwhile I been having issues getting this old machine going as i been using it once every blue moon over the past 4 years !

I can still use it for viewing DVD's once Windows 10 ends in about 12 days.

I have VLC media player and installed my own physical copy of Nero 2017 (and all its features).

It will be interesting to find out if the two aforementioned programs will stay once Windows 10 finishes on this old faithful desktop, the technicians assure me Yes but i have my doubts on that

I have also moved all my MP4's MP3, Flacs to an external W.D. 1 Tera byte model.

How many of us have switched over to 11 ?

Or are you, like me, having issues, leaving it to the last minute ?

Interesting times coming up

Got my desktop back in 2023, with Windows 11 installed. had to buy a separate CD/DVD drive because all newer PC's & lappies don't have those built in. Must be because people simply upload & download online or use i-cloud these days....ahhhh yes, technology...it just keeps on a changin. Good luck with your new set up.

My old Windows 10 PC is still running, but I've got a new 11 PC running alongside it.

Sort of 'belt-and-braces' approach...

Here's what my new laptop ASUS model looks like. I was at the store on Friday and the technicians let me check if all has been transfered from the Toshiba laptop to the new one.
They showed me and let me connect an external DVD player but couldn't say for sure if that plays the Blu-Rays (which i don't have BTW but realize these are fast replacing DVD's)

So, after all the back up and transfer, I have 372 GB remaining of 474 GB. Am happy with what they were able to achieve, particularly in just three days of service, but at the same time, i know i'm going to endure some grief learning the Windows 11 process.

Tuesday's the day that they'll deliver both models.

The plan is to still keep the Toshiba laptop and also this one i'm using right now but only for MP4, mpeg2 , mp3 and Flac files. I'll need to uninstall internet browsers like Firefox.
I have no choice.
Tuesday's the final day for security on Windows 10

Good one Colin. That's what i'd like to do, to keep them side-to-side.

Need to figure out if i can still use my scanner/photocopy machine on windows 10 after the internet stops on it.

Windows 10 is not ending in a few days.

Support for it is.

You can upgrade from 10 to 11 for free.

But, many Windows 10 computers dont have thes pecification required to do it and the upgrade fails.
Turns out its one tiny thing that you don't really neeed that causes most of the issues.
I cant recall what the name of the "thing" is, but whatever it is I downloaded the fix for it and voila, it worked! all my laptops and my PC are all running Windows 11.
I found the details on Microsofts website about the fix. If I can find the details I'll let you know.

Yes i know. I was getting prior messages from microsoft that my 10 years old Toshiba laptop was not compatible to convert to windows 11.

So OK. The plan is to pay off the third installment on what will be my new laptop, seen in the photo i posted earlier, and all the regular transfers from Windows 10 have been safely transferred as you may have noticed on the desktop icons.
Those previous MP3's and MP4 will not be transfered at this stage over to the newie. Because too many files could slow down the computer, i been told.

Many video and flac, mp3 files have earlier been backed up to a external HD and others will remain on my previous computers, apart from the toshiba model, i have one other laptop, another one is the old Windows XP desktop and one more that i'm using right this moment to type this, is a windows 10 desktop.

All files will remain on the older models at this point :guitar3:

I highly recommend storing all of your MP3's & MP4's, FLAC's, WAV's etc.... onto a Samsung T7 Solid State Drive (external) holds up to 2 TerraBytes of memory. I've got tens of thousands of MP3's from my previous PC's & Laptops over the years stored into this one unit....and I still have over half of available memory storage left. Quite durable I might add.

Very fast processing & no power is required. You just plug your USB cord from the SSD HD to your Desktop PC/Lappie

Always good to start fresh on your new laptop & not add your previous mp3's onto it.

Well the one i have is a WD hard disc external, but just 1 TB.

There is only
220 GB remaining on that one, but for sure, it does make sense to get a second external model as there's no guarantee of security.
Seven years ago i had the bad luck of my previous external Verbatim model that stopped working (after 4 years) and that was really tough as i lost various treasured pictures and vid's of my late labrador Gloria

Today i have maybe ten pictures saved on my old Toshiba laptop.

If you do get a second one, get the "Solid State Drive" aka "SSD" models, like the one I have or the Sandisk models. WD also makes them now in 2025. Solid State are FAR better (it is a newer technology) , more dependable & less corruptible than the regular HDD ones. Old regular HD drives have moving, spinning discs & parts which are vulnerable to getting corrupted more & files getting erased....and they're bulkier in size.
