When he was in the RCA recording studio for his second set of sessions there, Elvis considered recording Blue Suede Shoes.

As this was the current Sun single for Carl Perkins, producer Steve Sholes contacted Sam Phillips to ask if it was OK for Elvis to cut a cover version.

Sam agreed with the proviso that the Elvis version wasn't released as a single to rival Carl's.

RCA kept to that agreement [the later appearance of the song in the US singles charts by Elvis was from a big-selling EP].

However, the label for Elvis releases in the UK was HMV & they didn't feel bound by the agreement [or were perhaps unaware of it].

This meant the two versions were concurrently vying for position in the UK singles chart.

Carl peaked at No.10 & Elvis at No 9 !
